OUTDOOR AREA

The Museum's large outdoor area houses the most important anti-aircraft equipment.

The surface to air missle (SAM), which is called the Ilmatorjuntaohjus 79, was named in Finland from the year it was obtained from the USSR Anti-AirCraft system called the S-125 M1 Petshora. NATO name is the SA-3 Goa. The missile system in Finland has been updated and modernized two times from when it was first obtained.

The SAM 79, known as the ItO 79, is Finland's first area-air-defence system. It was designed mainly to be used in middle-area altitudes and for long distance ranges. However, the missile system was also functionable in lower altitudes. The main purpose of this missile system was to defend Helsinki at the time of war. The missle system was also used in preparation to prevent unwanted airspace activity in northern Finland.

The outdoor area consists of :

  • - missile mounts (3)
  • - surveillance radars
  • - a fire control station
  • - a loading truck
  • - missile equipment
There were 175 members of staff in the SAM battalion with 47 different vehicles.

In addition to missiles, the museums outdoor area also contains the “Tepsu“ surveillance radar, old Aguns and a big target drone.
